Sogndal

From the 1st of January 2020 the municipalities of Balestrand, Leikanger and Sogndal merged together as one municipality. The new municipality kept the name Sogndal and has approximately  11 500  inhabitants. It is the twelfth largest municipality in Vestland county, in terms of inhabitants. The Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) has a campus in Sogndal, and is one of Sogndal’s main employers.

The village of Sogndal is the regional centre in Sogn, and it also works as center of the municipality Sogndal. The administration site is situated in Leikanger. Balestrand will be the local centre for the western part of the municipality.

Sogndal is an established travel destination for activity-based tourism.
