About the West Norway Region
Population: 927 000 (2025)
Area: 49.204 km2
Population density: approximately 18.8 inhabitants per km²
West Norway Office covers the counties of Vestland and Møre og Romsdal, located along the south-western coast of Norway. The region is characterised by its extensive coastline, fjords, islands, and strong maritime traditions.
The region has a diverse, innovative, and export-oriented economy. Key industries include petroleum and process industries, fisheries and aquaculture, shipbuilding and offshore maritime activities, port and logistics services, metal production, and agriculture. These sectors play an important role in both the Norwegian and European economies.
West Norway’s dramatic natural landscape and rich cultural heritage also make it one of Norway’s leading tourist destinations. Tourism is therefore an important economic sector in both urban and rural areas.
Bergen, with approximately 285,000 inhabitants, is the largest city and serves as the regional capital. The city hosts several recognised higher education and research institutions and functions as a key hub for knowledge, innovation, and competence. In addition, strong regional research and education environments are present throughout both Vestland and Møre and Romsdal.
